Liverpool are losing patience in their pursuit of Alberto Moreno and are considering reviving an interest in Bundesliga star Ricardo Rodriguez as an alternative.
According to the Daily Mail, Brendan Rodgers' top target for the troublesome left-back position was Moreno and the the Anfield club thought they had done enough to secure a deal for him. However, the report claims his club Sevilla have bumped up the asking price for the 21-year-old to £20million and Liverpool are baulking at the increase.
In response to the price hike the Reds are considering going back in for Wolfsburg star Rodriguez, whom they were interested in during the January transfer window. The Switzerland international has impressed in the Bundesliga since moving there from FC Zurich in 2011 and has been drawing the attention of some of Europe's leading clubs.
As far as options over a right-back go, Liverpool are spoiled for choice if they can land either of these 21-year-olds as both have shown some terrific promise in their careers so far. Though it is hard to say, you would imagine the Swiss international is not going to cost anything close to £20million - what with the premium on Spanish players at the moment.
Said premium comes from generally knowing that getting a player that has come through the youth system there will be technically gifted and calm under pressure. However, it is quite a cost for a player that could well flop once making the switch to the Premier League - the same can be said for Rodriguez, but it is unlikely to cost the Reds £20million if he does and a successful move would mean greater sell-on value.
One thing that is for certain is that Rodgers desperately needs a new option at left-back after loanee Aly Cissokho failed to impress in his season at Anfield and they are lacking quality depth in the defensive ranks.
Quality is essential
Next season they will be embarking on a Champions League for the first time in five years and any weaknesses in their squad will be ruthlessly exposed by a far greater quality of opponent and a gruelling schedule.
Whether Liverpool opt for Moreno or Rodriguez, they must be sure they are adding quality because their leaky defence and inability to keep clean sheets was ultimately the reason why their Premier League title challenge could not go the distance. Rodgers has made his name on getting the best out of young players and smaller budgets by putting them in systems which allow their technical ability to thrive, but spending a significant transfer kitty this summer will be a big challenge for the former Swansea City manager.
