Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti could be contemplating a summer move for Benfica goalkeeper Jan Oblak.
Sources in Portugal claim Oblak is seen as the ideal replacement should Iker Casillas leave the club.
Casillas’ performance in Spain’s World Cup Group B fixture against the Netherlands have raised doubts about his place in the Real Madrid team, and Oblak could be the man to replace him according to A Bola.
Last season Ancelotti opted to start Diego Lopez in La Liga fixtures, with Casillas being used in the successful Champions League campaign and in the Copa del Rey.
That follows on from Jose Mourinho’s last season in charge at the Bernabeu where he caused outrage by benching club captain Casillas.
At just 21 Oblak is relatively inexperienced for a goalkeeper, but his performances in Benfica’s treble winning season have earned rave reviews.
Having initially started the campaign as second choice behind Artur, the Slovenian worked his way into the starting eleven during the later stages of the season, and started the Europa League final.
Despite keeping a clean sheet in the game, Oblak was on the losing side as Sevilla won the penalty shoot-out 4-2.
Ancelotti may face competition for Oblak’s signature, with A Bola claiming Atletico Madrid are also keen on bringing in the talented shot-stopper.
Atletico are on the hunt for a new goalkeeper with Jose Mourinho confirming Thibaut Courtois will be at Stamford Bridge next season.
Having played a key role in the final stages of the season, and also experiencing European football with Benfica, Oblak could be the man to fill the Belgian youngster’s gloves.
The 21-year-old started his career with Olimpija Ljubljana in his native Slovenia before moving to Portugal in 2010.
Loan spells at SC Beira, Uniao Leira and Rio Ave would follow before he finally got the chance to prove his worth in the Benfica first team.
In September 2012, following an impressive start to the season with Rio Ave, Oblak made his first start for the national team, but with the experienced Samir Handanovic ahead of him in the pecking order, he’s only added a further two caps.
Manager Jorge Jesus has had to deal with constant speculation regarding the future of stars such as Lazar Markovic, Ezequiel Garay, Enzo Perez and Nicolas Gaitan, and news of interest in Oblak will be far from welcome in Lisbon.
