Thomas Vermaelen to Manchester United - five better transfer options (1)

Manchester United supporters that are baffled by rumours linking Louis van Gaal with a move for Thomas Vermaelen can justifiably question the decision to sign the Arsenal captain because there are so many better options available this summer.

The Belgium international is nowhere near the calibre of player that the Red Devils should be targeting this transfer window, with a desperate need for a dominant defender to fill the void that has been left by Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand's respective departures.

Phil Jones and Chris Smalling have been talked up as Manchester United's long-term central defensive partnership, but on the evidence of their performances so far neither are ready for a permanent role at the heart of the back line.

Jonny Evans is arguably Van Gaal's best centre-back option, meaning the need for an influential leader to play alongside the Nortern Irishman next season must be a priority in the current market.

However, given Vermaelen's current plight - he can't even get in the Arsenal team - there is simply no benefit of bringing the Gunners outcast to Old Trafford, not even as a short term solution to Manchester United's defensive shortage.

Click through the tabs - above or below - to check out five better transfer options that Louis van Gaal should consider signing ahead of Arsenal's Thomas Vermaelen this summer.
