Is Tim Duncan the greatest of all time?

Published Add your comment

Most Chicago Bulls fanboys will scoff at the idea of Tim Duncan being mentioned with Michael Jordan in consideration for the title of greatest of all time. But when you step back and look at Duncan’s achievements it’s not a stretch to consider him.

Timmy has accumulated the most playoff blocks (516), as well as the most playoff defensive rebounds (1,838) and double-doubles (158) of any player.

Duncan has many more double-doubles than other greatest-of-all-time candidates; so much so, you could combine the number of playoff double-doubles of Michael Jordan (39), Kobe Bryant (23) Lebron James (60) and Kobe again and still not have as many playoff double-doubles as Tim 'Timeless' Duncan.

Duncan has more playoff points (4,988) than NBA Mount Rushmore frequenters, Larry Bird (3,897), Bill Russell (2,673) and Magic Johnson (3,701). Duncan has the most playoff offensive rebounds (748), besides Shaquille O'Neal.

Potentially padding some of these stats is Duncan’s fourth most playoff games played (234). Duncan is one more finals appearance (at least 12 games) away from playing the second most playoff games of any player.

Some of Duncan’s most impressive achievements are not found on a game’s stat sheet though. Duncan has the most consecutive playoff appearances (17) ahead of Bill Russell (13). Duncan has won the NBA championship five times and three of those five times he won the Finals MVP.

Each great champion has a unique facet of their career which stands out amongst all players and for Tim Duncan that is consistency. No other player has been mentally driven and physically resilient enough to start on a championship team in three different decades. Duncan has been consistently valuable to his franchise for nearly 20 years.

So is Tim Duncan the greatest of all time? Depends on what you think is the most important aspect of a player. If dependability, rebounding and blocking are how you judge a player’s greatness, then Tim 'Timeless' Duncan is the greatest basketball player of all time.

Even if not, you have to admit he deserves to be considered.
