Manchester United forward Bebe is open to the idea of joining Portuguese giants Benfica this summer following an impressive season on loan at Pacos de Ferreira. The 23-year-old scored 12 goals in 27 league appearances for the Primeira Liga outfit, and his performances have not gone unnoticed by last season's Europa League finalists.
According to Portuguese newspaper O Jogo, Bebe is attracted by the possibility of joining Benfica, where he can continue playing at the highest level after leaving Old Trafford. The chance to play Champions League football will also play a role in the much-maligned forward's decision this summer.
Bebe only has a year left to run on his current Manchester United contract and is not expected to be offered a new deal from the Premier League giants, who have only played the former Portugal Under-21 international on a handful of occasions since he completed his shock £7.4 million transfer from Vitória de Guimarães in 2010.
Bebe's agent: Jorge Mendes
The chances of Bebe securing a summer move to Benfica are enhanced by the fact his agent is Jorge Mendes, who has a close relationship with the Eagles' president Luís Filipe Vieira. Benfica head coach Jorge Jesus is also a fan and will reserve room in his attack for the misunderstood winger.
New United boss Louis van Gaal is not expected to even consider Bebe as an option, even though he likes his sides to play with width. The Dutchman already has the likes of Nani, Ashley Young, Adnan Januzaj and Antonio Valencia in his ranks, while the likes of Juan Mata, Wayne Rooney and Shinji Kagawa are also capable of playing in wide areas if required.
Bebe will leave Old Trafford having made a total of seven appearances for the Red Devils over the course of four seasons. He did, however, manage to score two goals during his tenure with the 20-time English champions - one of which came in the League Cup, and the other in the Champions League.
United making a mistake letting him go?
The mere suggestion that Manchester United could possibly be making an error by selling Bebe would have been laughable 12 months ago. But after such an impressive season in Portugal, there are some - United fans included - who believe Van Gaal should give the winger another opportunity next summer.
Several of Bebe's goals went viral last season, thanks to their surprisingly good quality, and we finally caught a glimpse of why Ferguson may have agreed to pay out so much money for the one-time Homeless World Cup star.
