James Vince has established himself as an England batsman in the making over the course of the season so far. May it be four day cricket, may it be a 20-over game, he simply has been prolific in every format.
1,000+ championship runs, 220+ T20 Blast runs with a strike rate well in excess of 150. Mind you, I am not afraid of comparing him with Kevin Pietersen, not especially after he hammered Essex with 240 off just 222 deliveries (his fourth century this year) in Hampshire's recent County Championship triumph. He is one of the best on the county circuit, of that there is no doubt.
A humdrum England batting line-up has been Alastair Cook's worry for a long time. With the presence of Cook himself added to Gary Ballance and Joe Root, the English ODI team hasn't really done well with the scoring rates lately.
One of the major reasons why Jos Buttler, Ravi Bopara, and Eoin Morgan haven't fired as consistently as they should is because most of the times they've come in, wickets have been down and the team is limping at a run rate of four.
Cook can't be left out of the squad as he is the captain, but the need of either Ballance or Root to be out has started to be felt. At such a time, I'd adjure the selectors to give Vince a chance to shine. Just think for a moment, a lad who strikes at almost 82 in four-day cricket, what wonders can he do in the limited version.
A technically sound batsman who is solid, consistent and is capable of winning matches, that's what the English team needs and thats what Vince will give as well. For me, he is a must have in all three formats. Yes, it'd be a difficult decision to fit him but I'm sure a gallant decision has to be made. Maybe Root should replace Sam Robson and Vince should replace the former. However, no such brave decisions would be required in the limited overs as Vince is an obvious preference (for me) over Ballance in the ODIs and over Root in the T20s.
England surely have their eyes on the world cup, but they should probably forget about it until the time they decide to have Vince (at least) in the team because this one player will surely boost the team's hitting and scoring ability massively. It's Vince time gentlemen, if someone deserves an England shirt, it is the Hampshire boy.
