Following the desolation that accompanied Luis Suarez’s 85th minute winner against England, it is worth considering: Should Roy Hodgson’s side have expected to take anything from the game?

Despite the fact that Uruguay hadn’t beaten a European team at a World Cup since 1970, the South Americans have a good track record at recent international tournaments.

Even without a fully fit Suarez, they claimed all three points, leaving England on the brink.

Hodgson hasn’t done much wrong at all in terms of his team selection, but are there any players that he wishes had flown out to Brazil?

England have taken a young squad to the tournament, full of hope and optimism for the future, but the addition of a few older and wiser heads may have made a difference in either the Italy or Uruguay games.
