Manchester United are in danger of slipping slowly into mediocrity if they do not get things right in the transfer window this summer, as even a small misjudgement could have major ramifications for their future.
Louis van Gaal will arrive later this summer once the Netherlands' World Cup is over and he has been tasked with rebuilding the squad that slipped to a miserable seventh place finish in the Premier League under David Moyes, missing out on Champions League football and all its riches for the coming season.
Future in the balance
Old Trafford has become accustomed to seeing the world's best players rock up in midweek and test the stars plying their trade for the Red Devils at that time, but the nightmare season that saw Moyes not even last a season in the hot seat could make participation in Europe's premier club competition a thing of the past.
To get straight back into the Champions League places, Van Gaal needs to add some real quality to a squad that some have argued has been neglectfully allowed to deteriorate over the last few seasons, and he cannot accept anything but top quality if they are to make up the ground lost on their rivals last term.
Not good enough?
However, there have been some worryingly sub-par players having their names linked with moves to Old Trafford this season and Van Gaal needs to make sure they go no further than rumours - we have picked out five players that need to be left alone.
