With Arsene Wenger lacking defensive options after Bacary Sagna's move to Manchester City, Arsenal are about to launch a surprise move for Chelsea defender Branislav Ivanovic, reports Metro.
The Serbian was a crucial part of the Chelsea side last year and is being targeted by Wenger as he looks to replace Thomas Vermaelen and Sagna.
It also seems that he could be available at a bargain price, with the club set to open the bidding at £7 million.
It may be hard for Arsenal to lure the Serbian away though, as he started 50 games for Jose Mourinho's side last year, as he formed part of a solid defence which became infamous for "parking the bus".
Having spent most of last season on the right side of defence, a switch to the Emirates could see him switch inside and play a centre back role.
This is largely due to the presence of Carl Jenkinson and reported signing of Ivory Coast right back Serge Aurier. But the expected departure of Vermaelen leaves the Gunners needing centre-back cover, which Ivanovic is more than capable of providing.
The move could follow in a pattern of similar Arsenal signings, with veteran defenders William Gallas and Mikaël Silvestre being snapped up by Wenger in recent years.
The amount of rumours regarding defensive players will please Arsenal fans, with hefty scorelines against the big sides costing them dear last term. The addition of a striker is also on many fans' wishlists, as they look for more success this campaign.
