Manchester United fans have reacted furiously to the news that Antonio Valencia has been handed a new three year deal at Old Trafford, and are actively voicing their anger.
As relayed by Metro, supporters of the Red Devils have taken to Twitter to bombard the official United account with tweets venting their frustration that a player many deem to be incapable of performing consistently at the highest level has been handed a new contract. Reports earlier on today confirmed that Valencia has indeed been given a three-year extension on his stay at Old Trafford, with an option included to extended the deal by a further 12 months.
However United will have been left red-faced after receiving a hearty amount of criticism following the official confirmation on their Twitter account, with fans obviously not convinced that the 28-year-old winger is deserved of a new deal. It remains to be seen whether or not the Ecuadorian will be central to new boss Louis van Gaal’s plans, but there’s no doubt Valencia will be expected to pick up his performances in a United shirt, having failed to impress during David Moyes’ doomed reign last term.
VALENCIA’S STANDING AT UNITED
The former Wigan man initially signed for Sir Alex Ferguson in 2009 and has since been used predominantly on the right hand side of midfield. Though not considered a ‘flop’ in the same sense as the likes of Ashley Young and Tom Cleverley the wideman has attracted his fair share of boo boys, and the club’s decision to cement his future will likely have been met with just as much surprise as it was anger. Only last week speculation was rife that Liverpool were considering a move for him as Brendan Rodgers looks to add quality in depth to his squad, but the agreement at hand has put paid to any notion of him switching to Anfield.
VAN GAAL’S PURCHASES
It remains unclear just how many of the current United crop will be considered key to Van Gaal, as the Dutchman goes about instigating a new era at the club. A host of first-team players could well find themselves moving on to pastures new, whilst others who were important to Ferguson and Moyes may not find themselves in the same light next season. United’s new manager has made it clear from the off that he is keen to attract the biggest names this summer, and the likes of Edinson Cavani, Toni Kroos, Paul Pogba and Mats Hummels have all been named in connection with big money moves. One would assume that if Van Gaal has his way, the likes of Valencia would definitely struggle to retain a spot in the starting XI on a regular basis.
