Picking a captain for a side low on confidence is never easy. The candidates have to not only excel on the pitch but also be a leader off of it, as well as promising to inspire those around them to raise their games.

This is why the decision facing Louis van Gaal when he first arrives at Manchester United is going to be made all the more difficult. The departure of the steadfast Nemanja Vidic has not only left a gigantic hole to be filled in the heart of the defence, but also opened the door for a new skipper to be named, hopefully one who can lead the club back up the cliff to the plateau of greatness they were formerly on under Sir Alex Ferguson.

It makes sense to assume that the web will soon be inundated with lists and opinions based upon who Van Gaal will make his leader when he returns from the World Cup, so we've decided to stay one step ahead of the game and devise a list of those best qualified to be handed the honour.

You won't agree with all of our choices, but some of them may just give you food for thought. Remember, after looking at our selection we want to hear your thoughts, so make sure you post your ideal captain the comments section below...
