Costa Rica's amazing escape: Three Reasons for Group D shocker

Out of all the teams in Group D no one expected Costa Rica to make it out of the group let alone top it, here I take a look at why they defied all odds.

1. Underrated

When the World Cup draw was made Group D looked like the group of death, especially as an England or Costa Rica fan. On first glances it looked like Costa Rica would be the team that everyone would beat but it hasn't turned out like that.

Looking at the Costa Rica team there are only a couple of players that most people would recognise and that is Joel Campbell, Bryan Ruiz and Bryan Oviedo. Everton's Oviedo suffered a shock injury before the tournament so he wouldn't even be taking part.

With England, Uruguay and Italy also in the group Costa Rica have taken everyone be surprise be already beating the Italians and the South Americans, only conceding one goal. No team seems to have any response when they score as it looks like they didn't expect them to.

2. Freedom to play

A lot of teams would have crumbled when playing top teams like Italy and Uruguay but with Costa Rica being the underdogs they seem to be playing more freely.

There is no pressure on them as they came into the tournament as favourites to be knocked out of the group. Players such as Arsenal's Joel Campbell have been a revelation so far at this World Cup as he has used his youth to torment opposition defenders.

Both Italy and Uruguay gave Costa Rica too much time on the ball and this is something England will have to address when playing them in their final group game otherwise Costa Rica will finish the group with the maximum of nine points.

3. Counter Attack

They may have weaknesses at the back but going forward they have everything. They counter attack at high speeds and with players like Campbell there is always a chance of beating any defender.

An example of this was in the Italy game when Campbell countered and was brought down in the box by Giorgio Chiellini, which should have been a penalty.

The pace this team has will challenge the best teams in this World Cup however I fear they could become undone when meeting other South American teams who also have pace.

I believe Costa Rica will make it to the quarter finals but will be beaten by England in the final group game.
