Former Liverpool and Fulham defender John Arne Riise could be offered to Toulouse after being released by Fulham, according to

The 33-year-old - who was released by Fulham after relegation at the end of the season - could move back to France, where he spent three years at Monaco before moving to Liverpool in 2001 for £4 million.

The defender became a key part of the Anfield club’s back four, making 234 appearances and scoring 31 goals, often from outside of the box. He was sold to Roma in 2008 after winning the Champions League and the FA Cup at Liverpool.

Riise didn’t have the same amount of success at Roma, despite becoming a fan favourite and making 99 appearances. He moved back to the Premier League in 2011 signing for Fulham in a three year deal.

He joined his brother, Bjorn Riise who signed for the London based club in 2009. Riise failed to have the same impact at Fulham as he did in Liverpool, failing to score a single goal in his 87 appearances for the Cottagers. He came under scrutiny from some fans who felt that the 33 year old has lost some of his pace, and no longer could produce the driving runs forward that made him so popular at Anfield.

Riise was often accused of making errors that led to Fulham conceding, either by giving the ball away or being caught out of position after making an attacking run.

He could be expect to take the place of Serge Aurier who has caught the eye of Swansea and QPR with both clubs believed to be lining up bids for the 21 year old.

The Ivory Coast defender is currently representing his country in Brazil, having played in both of the African side’s games so far. He set up both Wilfred Bony and Didier Drogba’s goals in the first game against Japan which they won 2-1.

Manchester United are also believed to be interested in signing the defender. It is rumoured that Arsenal and Marseille have been tracking the youngster for some time. Arsenal are looking for a replacement after Bacary Sagna moved to Manchester City last week after seven years at the Gunners.

Aurier has scored eight times since his move from Lens in 2012, and has made 70 appearances for Toulouse since his move. The youngster also has received ten caps for his country with many more expected in the future. It is believed that a bid of around £8 million could see the African move to the Premier League.
