Manchester United fans woke up to a pleasant surprise Saturday morning as it was revealed that Antonio Valencia had put pen to paper on a new deal which ties him to Old Trafford for the next three years.

Of course football is very much a matter of opinion, and it would appear - according to reports at least - that not everyone who follows the Red Devils was happy with the idea of the Ecuadorian winger being handed a reward after a relatively tame season. But whilst Louis van Gaal may have been the first to quickly decide the future of a player some deem to be a flop, he most certainly won't be the last.

With the biggest clubs in Europe all looking to improve their squads in time for next season it's only a matter of time before choices are made which will determine the fates of a individuals who have struggled in recent years, or indeed may struggle in years to come. Will they be given more time to impress through another contract? Or will they be given the boot?

Here we pick through the Top 5: Big name players who don't deserve new contracts, and therefore mustn't be given one.
