Thomas Vermaelen is confident of completing a transfer to Manchester United this summer - and Arsenal fans can direct their ire at Robin Van Persie.
According to the Daily Mail, Van Persie's friendship with the Belgian international has played a big role in helping convince Vermaelen to push for a move to United.
United will hold off on making a bid until the World Cup is over, but Arsenal can expect an offer around the £9m mark for their defender.
The Belgium defender is not first choice at the Emirates Stadium, so Arsenal fans would not begrudge him a move to get first-team football - but not to Manchester United.
For one thing, Vermaelen would be no more likely to get first-team football at Old Trafford than he would at Arsenal despite the departure of both Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand.
Add to the fact that lingering animosity remains over the deal that brought Robin Van Persie to Old Trafford, and Vermaelen can expect a rough ride should he complete a move to Louis Van Gaal's new club.
HIS PERFORMANCES LAST SEASON
Arsenal secured fourth spot yet again last season, but Vermaelen was relegated to a bit-part role. Arsene Wenger decided that Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny would be his first-choice partnership, and Vermaelen had to make do with a place on the bench for most of the key games.
In the end Vermaelen made just 14 appearances, and just seven of those were starts. The 28-year-old is club captain at the Emirates Stadium, and his ability is not in question.
But injuries and the impressive performances of Mertesacker and Koscielny have starved him of opportunities to break back into the side.
As a result, he's been consistently linked with a move away from Arsenal, although United are a relatively recent addition to the clubs thought to be keeping tabs.
Napoli were at one stage the frontrunners to sign him, and he's reportedly good friends with Belgium international teammate and Napoli winger Dries Mertens.
In the battle of the friendships though, it looks like Van Persie could be the winner.
