Most clubs spend their summers speculating on who to buy, with the impetus on strengthening the team for the upcoming season.
But most fans tend to ignore the darker side of transfer talks, the ones that involve deciding who the club will release and, more interestingly, who they will sell.
Selling a player a club no longer wants is a delicate business. If they appear too keen to rid themselves of a talent, the transfer value plummets. Similarly, if they ask for too much, interest will quickly die as other clubs move elsewhere.
If clubs get it right, they can offload an unwanted player for maximum value at just the right time.
Some of Europe's biggest clubs will be looking to do the same this summer and, for some, the time is right to sell.
Maybe the player is no longer needed, and maybe the current transfer rate will never be higher. Either way, clubs must sell while they still can.
