Manchester United appear set to imminently complete their first signing of the summer, with Ander Herrera, once a target for David Moyes, expected to become the maiden acquisition of the Louis van Gaal era.

Last summer Manchester United came close to brining Herrera to Old Trafford only to be stung by complications regarding his release clause, but such problems have been overcome almost a year on from the initial interest.

The club are reported to have agreed to activate Herrera’s buyout stipulation of €36 million, and the Athletic Bilbao midfielder will join Manchester United once personal teams have been agreed and a medical has been completed.

Herrera was not expected to be the first player through the door under Van Gaal’s tenure, but the arrival of the 24-year-old is set to prompt a flurry of transfer activity at Old Trafford once the transfer window opens.
