Carlos Vela has reportedly signed a new four-year contract at the Spanish club, according to his teammate Antoine Griezmann.
The move comes after Sociedad agreed to pay €11 million for the rest of the player’s rights from Arsenal, as well as up to €5 million in additional fees. Vela had been linked with a move back to the Gunners, but it now appears that the forward, 25, will remain at the club for the foreseeable future.
Vela moved to Sociedad in 2011 after six years at Arsenal. His stint included several loan spells, with the likes of Salamanca, Osasuna and West Brom deciding to take the Mexican starlet on short term deals. He later moved on loan to Sociedad before making his deal permanent in 2012 after a string of impressive performances. Arsenal had previously held a speculated £3.5 million release clause, but this has been forgone by Sociedad paying the rest of the player’s rights.
According to Inside Spanish Football, Griezmann said the following: “(Vela) is calm, he’s already signed with La Real and he seems happy with that.”
Griezmann’s own future is still up for much speculation, with the French forward admitting: “I don’t know about my own future. We’ll have to wait and see. Hopefully I will stay, but we’re going to wait.”
