Everton, Swansea and Arsenal have been dealt a blow in the chase for Belgian youngster Michy Batshuayi, who is reportedly on the verge of signing for Marseille according to reports in France.
The 20-year-old striker has scored 49 goals in 128 appearances for Standard Liége and has also made a number of impressive appearances for the Belgium under-21 side, managing five goals in just 12 appearances.
Batshuayi has already confirmed his departure from Standard on Twitter, and now looks set to join Marseille, with only a few minor problems left to be sorted out before the deal is confirmed.
The deal will come as a shock to many, as the player had previously claimed that Arsenal, who he supported throughout his childhood, was his preferred destination and he would be willing to continue in the Belgian league until they were willing to make a move for him.
Arsenal had sent scouts to watch the youngster, and contact had reportedly been made between the two clubs, but something has persuaded Batshuayi to opt for a move to France instead.
Perhaps the speculation about Mario Balotelli’s potential move to the Emirates was the deciding factor, with the Belgian more likely to be given first-team opportunities at Marseille.
