Reports emerged this morning claiming that the Red Devils were about to make Shaw the most expensive teenager of all time, with a vastly improved offer from their initial £27 million bid. The Mirror add that the 18-year-old would be handed a contract worth around £100,000-per-week.
NO MANCHESTER UNITED OFFER?
However local media in Southampton claim that isn't the case. While Manchester United's interest in Shaw is well established, the Daily Echo insists that the reports of a record-breaking offer are not true.
They say that while discussions have been held, no formal offer has been made as yet. Any deal could well take place in the coming weeks with England returning from the World Cup prematurely, but as things stand nothing has changed.
If reports of Manchester United's £34 million offer do indeed prove to be true, then it would represent quite a gamble from the Old Trafford hierarchy. The Red Devils have been linked with talented youngster Daley Blind, who has looked strong at the World Cup, and could secure his services for as little as £12 million.
That deal appears to represent much better value, and given that incoming Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal knows him well and is working with him at the World Cup, could actually be a better fit.
The Red Devils have cleared space in their squad for a new full-back, with Alexander Buttner on his way Dynamo Moscow. The Dutchman provided back-up to Patrice Evra last season, and with the French veteran signing on for another season, Shaw could take over that spot while learning the ropes at Old Trafford.
