Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal looks set to make Athletic Bilbao midfielder Ander Herrera his first signing at Old Trafford.

The Spaniard looks set to sign for the Red Devils for £28.8m, as another new era begins at the Theatre of Dreams. Manchester United have struggled in the midfield department for a number of years now, so the addition of Herrera will certainly be a welcome one for fans of United.

Last season the likes of Tom Cleverley, Michael Carrick, Marouane Fellaini and Daren Fletcher all struggled with consistency, but will any of them get to play alongside Herrera next term? Under the new regime, the Red Devils stars will be desperate to prove their worth to the new manager, but it remains to be seen as to whether he hands them a starring role in 2014/15.

Van Gaal could even further add to his options in the middle of the park in this summer's transfer window. Herrera certainly looks set to start in midfield, but who will play alongside him?

It remains to be seen as to whether the new Manchester United boss plays two or three in the middle of the park next term, but we're going to assess his options.

Scroll through the following pages to see the players that we think are contenders to play in the centre of midfield at Manchester United next season:
