Ander Herrera is set to complete his £28.4 million transfer to Manchester United shortly, and is due to complete a medical at the club's training ground today.
The Spaniard was heavily linked with a move to Old Trafford last year while David Moyes was still in charge but that fell through in farcical circumstances, with lawyers claiming to represent the Red Devils arriving in Spain to broker the deal, only for the Premier League club to deny any knowledge of the trio.
First Manchester United deal
Herrera will reportedly be handed a £100,000-per-week contract over four years, and will become the first signing made by Manchester United under new boss Louis van Gaal. According to the Daily Mail, the 24-year-old is due in Manchester today to under the formalities of a medical, with the transfer expected to be confirmed by the club shortly.
Manchester United are believed to have acted decisively by offering Herrera's release clause of £28.4 million because that figure was set to rise to around £32 million after July. That marks a departure from last summer, when the Red Devils passed up the opportunity to save £4 million on Marouane Fellaini before paying his bumped-up release clause of £27.5 million on transfer deadline day.
News of the Spaniard's arrival will be a huge boost for Manchester United fans, who had been growing increasingly concerned over the club's lack of activity in the transfer market. The likes of Chelsea and Liverpool have already made additions to their squad, but despite plenty of rumours the Red Devils haven't followed suit as yet.
It is expected to be a summer of upheaval at Old Trafford, with a host of big-name players already departing. Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic have walked away at the end of their contracts, while Alexander Buttner is on his way to Dynamo Moscow.
Along with the departures, Manchester United are expected to make plenty of new additions alongside Herrera, with Van Gaal said to be targeting a host of his former players.
Arjen Robben and Bastian Schweinsteiger have been linked with a move to Old Trafford having worked with the 62-year-old during his time at Bayern Munich. He's also said to be after the likes of Toni Kroos and Luke Shaw, as well as Daley Blind and Memphis Depay, who are in his Netherlands squad for the World Cup.
