Lebron James could well be on his way out of the Miami Heat after deciding to opt out of his contract with the former NBA Champions. James’ decision could well fall down to the strength of the rest of the Heat roster, and it seems like Miami have that at the forefront of their mind for the NBA Draft which takes place on Thursday.
And that includes doing everything in their power to try and nab NCAA Tournament winning point guard Shabazz Napier in the first round. That would actually mean having to trade up from their current spot in proceedings, in an attempt to get the man who was Lebron’s favourite point man in College Basketball last season.
From ESPN’s Chad Ford: “Sources: Heat aggressively trying to move up in draft. Target is Shabazz Napier. LeBron thinks he’s best PG in the draft & Heat need a PG.”
The Heat own the No. 26 pick on Thursday and Napier is being rumored to be going anywhere between the No. 18 and No. 22 pick so a jump isn’t outlandish. Though, it’s not as if the Heat have a ton of tradeable assets either so they may find it somewhat difficult to find a team willing to help them, especially considering the acquisition of Napier helps James return to the Miami Heat.
If there is a silver lining for the Miami Heat however it’s that the Phoenix Suns and the Chicago Bulls own the No. 18 and No. 19 selections respectively. Both teams have multiple picks in the first round and have been pressing hard to move such picks, so it’s not as if teams in that area aren’t willing to make a deal.
It cannot be understated quite how little tradeable assets Miami have at their disposal, but right now they are doing all they can to keep LBJ happy, and when you’re the best player on the planet then it’s something the team simply have to do.
