It’s an exciting time to be a Manchester United supporter. Louis van Gaal has arrived and there’s talk that as much as £200 million will be spent on new summer signings, starting with the acquisition of Spanish midfielder Ander Herrera from Athletic Bilbao.

But which squad number will he and the rest of Manchester United’s new signings be handed this summer? And will any of the Red Devils’ current squad members also switch numbers?

No. 7 up for grabs

Squad numbers may hold little significance at most clubs, but that’s certainly not the case at Old Trafford, where the number seven shirt is more iconic than anywhere else. Legends such as George Best, Eric Cantona and Cristiano Ronaldo have won the No. 7 on the back of their Manchester United shirts - but it’s currently without an owner.

Antonio Valencia had it for a season but handed it back at the start of the 2013/14 campaign after deciding that the pressure of wearing the famous shirt number was simply too great. Only players who relish the limelight need apply.

No. 9 and No. 11 available too

Other key shirt numbers are also available, however. There’s the number five shirt vacated by Rio Ferdinand, the number nine shirt previously worn by Dimitar Berbatov and, of course, there’s the number eleven shirt, synonymous with Ryan Giggs, who brought an end to his playing career at the end of last season.
