A team that acquires stars like James Harden and Dwight Howard in a span of two years should be congratulated, but a team that could potentially acquire Carmelo Anthony and LeBron James in the same Offseason?
Yeah that’s right, it’s absolutely jaw-dropping.
Now there would be a catch in order for this to happen. The Houston Rockets would have to agree to a sign and trade with the New York Knicks, which would move Harden for Anthony.
Rockets Point Guard Jeremy Lin would also have to be moved in the trade in order to free up cap space to acquire James, but at least they have already seen Center Omer Asik depart. Their hope is that LeBron can quickly be put in a new “Big 3” consisting of Anthony, Howard, and James himself.
If the team can actually keep Chandler Parsons, this team could truly contend for a championship on paper.
I say that it’s on paper because the only experience that James has playing with both “Melo” and Howard has been on All-Star teams but there has always been reports of both Carmelo and LeBron wanting to play together.
Keep in mind that this is already a team that seems to be on the inside of every potential deal this Offseason.
Whether it be a potential trade for Kevin Love, signing free agent Guard Kyle Lowry of the Toronto Raptors, and a number of trade inquiries made by teams interested in Parsons the Rockets are at the front of the action.
Fortunately for Houston, they were able to stockpile enough assets that can be either traded or kept and developed.
Exhibit A: Chandler Parsons, an excellent three-point shooter who has also shown some ability when attacking the basket and a knack for pesky defense.
Exhibit B: Terrence Jones, another three point marksman, Jones’ play this season absolutely made Omer Asik expendable and turned him into trade fodder. He can rebound, pass, and attack the basket; as well as doing all of those things at a high clip.
But if the Rockets do find a way to acquire both Anthony and James, one has to ask, can the chemistry really work between those three superstars (James, Melo, and Howard)?
Only time will tell, free agency opens up July 1 and you can bet that there will be excitement on that day in Houston.
