Manchester United are closing in on the signing of Southampton full-back Luke Shaw, according to the Telegraph.

The addition of Shaw will certainly add competition to places in the left-back area at Old Trafford. After Alex Buttner left the club yesterday, Patrice Evra is now the club's only real left-back.

The Frenchman - who is currently starring in this summer's World Cup - signed a new one-year deal with the Old Trafford outfit at the end of the season, but will now have to battle with Shaw for a first team spot. United boss Van Gaal will hope that Evra acts as Shaw's mentor, as the youngster's clearly recognised as Evra's long term replacement.
