Chelsea have held advanced negotiations with the representatives of Borussia Dortmund star Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and are confident of completing a shock cut-price swoop for the dynamic, pacy forward, according to France Football.
Aubameyang enjoyed a particularly productive first season in the Bundesliga after completing an £11m switch from Saint-Etienne to Dortmund last summer, scoring 16 goals and largely helping the German giants to cushion the blow of losing Mario Gotze to bitter rivals Bayern Munich.
That impressive form has only served to alert the likes of Roma, Newcastle United and Chelsea to the 25-year-old's talents though, with the Blues moving to hold discussions with the Gabon international's agent over a summer switch.
Mourinho means business
Blues fans have every reason to be hugely encouraged by a swift, successful start to the transfer window for Mourinho, who has already managed to persuade former Arsenal captain Cesc Fabregas to make a controversial £30m switch to Stamford Bridge.
Atletico Madrid duo Diego Costa and Filipe Luis are widely expected to follow Fabregas from La Liga to West London next week in a double £50m deal, but clearly there's still plenty room for further additions if tentative talks for Aubameyang are anything to go by.
Mourinho is all too aware that Chelsea missed out on Premier League and Champions League success last season primarily due to a lack of firepower when it really mattered most, with an urgent remit to address that issue at the top of his agenda.
Misfiring strike trio Samuel Eto'o, Fernando Torres and Demba Ba all failed to hit double figures in the Premier League last season, which has forced Mourinho to take the view that all three may need to be replaced to give Costa capable support next season.
Aubemeyang would fit the bill nicely and is widely reported to have a very surprising £6m release clause inserted in his contract with Dortmund, although Jurgen Klopp's side have been at pains to insist the star is not for sale after just a single season in Germany.
A difference maker
If Chelsea can turn these talks into a tangible offer they would have a genuine potential star on their hands, with Aubemyang possessing the ability to turn defence into attack very quickly thanks to electric pace and clever movement in advanced areas.
Aubameyang was used almost exclusively on the right wing by Dortmund last season, but he can play through the middle and did so with brilliant results in Ligue 1 with Saint-Etienne before landing his big move to the Bundesliga.
Chelsea only signed another winger in Mohamed Salah six months ago and also have a Brazilian international in Willian that likes to play in the same position, which seems to suggest Aubameyang's versatility makes him a good squad option rather than a direct replacement for either player.
Mourinho has some way to get this deal move sealed and delivered though, with Aubameyang and Fenerbache forward Emmanuel Emenike both currently being considered as Costa's main competition at the Bridge next year and no immediate rush to get either deal done.
