A World Cup win

A lot of football debates seem to centre around who is the best player in the world, Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo? But I think if Argentina win the World Cup, Messi will be awarded with the honour of being the best player.

Both Messi and Ronaldo have won practically ever competition available to them, including La Liga and the Champions League, but neither have been able to get their hands on the biggest trophy of them all, the World Cup.

Many people believe without this neither man can not be regarded as the best players of all time.

The two superstars have many accolades between them including winning the FIFA Ballon d'Or but they need the World Cup to cement their place in history.

In my opinion whoever wins the World Cup first will become the best player, and it looks like it is going to be Messi.

Ronaldo at a disadvantage

I do feel sorry for Ronaldo as his Portugal side aren't as strong as Argentina and they rely heavily on him. He got Portugal to the World Cup practically by himself. Messi has a lot of other good players around him to help share the load, for example Sergio Aguero and Angel di Maria.

Ronaldo definitely deserved to win the Ballon d'Or after his performances last season but after Messi was injured it was clear towards the end of the season he was saving himself for Brazil.

Messi has scored four goals in the World Cup so far and is likely to score more as Argentina progress. Ronaldo only managed to score one in the final group game against Ghana.

Destiny awaits

Argentina will face Switzerland in the round of 16 and I fully expect them to comfortably make it into the quarter finals. In their half of the draw only the Netherlands can cause them problems and they can't play the Dutch until the semi-finals.

Messi is also in contention for the golden boot award and winning this as well as the World Cup itself in my eyes would settle the best player in the world argument for good.

Players are judged on their accolades and to go down in history as one of the greatest players ever they need to win the World Cup.
