Liverpool are emerging as frontrunners in the scrap for Mexican keeper, Guillermo Ochoa, after Brendan Rodgers looks set to sanction a deal for Pepe Reina to return to Napoli on loan for another season, as reported by the Express.

The 28-year old Mexican has attracted a host of attention from around Europe following a superb World Cup, with Liverpool leading the race after Napoli manager Rafa Benitez expressed an interest in taking Reina back to Italy for another season.

Reina to return on loan to Napoli

Reina looked set to return to Liverpool after Napoli refused the meet the asking price for the keeper, however the latest news coming out of Italy appears to have cleared the way for Rodgers to bring in Ochoa, who will provide stiff competition to to first choice stopper, Simon Mignolet.

Free agent

Ochoa is a free agent after his contract with French minnows, Ajaccio, expired shortly before the World Cup, and the Mexican stopper has showcased his skills perfectly in the Brazilian shopwindow, attracting attention from big spending Monaco, Arsenal and a host of other top clubs.

Barcelona withdraw interest

It was thought Barcelona were going to sign the Mexican after making contact with his agent, Jorge Berlanga, however the Catalan giants have opted for Real Sociedad's Chilean keeper, Claudio Bravo, to compete with German youngster Marc-Andre ter Stegen effectively ruling them out of the race.

- Bargain he comes free!
- Premier League move looks likely

It is hard to believe he isn't already playing for a top European club, however a meal of contaminated meat is what appears to been the unfortunate obstacle in his career to date.

In 2011 he was one of five Mexican players to have tested positive for a banned substance, clenbuterol, which was later found to have come unknowingly from a contaminated piece of meat.

At the time Ochoa was on the verge of signing for PSG, however it took over two months to clear his name by which time the deal with the Paris club had fallen through, forcing him into a move with League 1 strugglers, Ajaccio, where he has spent the last three years, until they got relegated last season.

Ochoa is sure to be a hit

Signing with a little known French club led to him falling out of favour with the Mexican national team and being on the back end of a host of criticism from Mexican fans however it appears the keeper has made amends and got his career back on track.
