The group stages of the 2014 World Cup are over and some big names from some big countries have stepped off the biggest stage of all without leaving any fond lasting memories worthy of a curtain-call.

We keep hearing about the stars who have bucked the trend of under-performances at the major tournaments. Arjen Robben, Lionel Messi, Karim Benzema and Neymar, to name but a few, have delighted crowds.

More than a few failures

However for every performing superstar, there have been many to disappoint. Through ill-discipline, costly mistakes or general poor performance, a number of players have let their countries down in Brazil.
