Playing at a World Cup is so often the highlight of a footballer’s career, but for every Karim Benzema there are 100 Theo Walcotts.

As teams begin to fly home following unsuccessful showings in Brazil, those players should pause and consider some players who didn’t quite make the cut this summer. While most top-end names will probably be spending their downtime on a yacht in the Caribbean, they would all rather be perspiring in Porto Alegre.

A sacred few actually have the privilege of stepping onto hallowed turf every four years, with injuries, retirements and dips in form all stopping squad selection. This tournament is just like every other, with a host of star names missing from the billing.
