Tim Howard turned in an historic performance despite a 2-1 extra time loss to Belgium in an exhilarating round of 16 tie that again showcased the brilliance of this year's World Cup.

Howard set a World Cup record for most saves in a match after denying the Belgium onslaught with 16 heroic blocks that were ultimately not enough to see the United States progress past their european opposition to the quarter final stage of the competition.

The U.S began to feel World Cup and football fever with their beloved nation playing in the knockout stages and their keeper put on such a display that even remarks of "Howard for President" were seen across social media.

Howard was the main reason that the game entered an extra 30 minutes of action and despite conceding two goals, plaudits rained upon the shoulders of the Everton keeper who inspired his teammates to battle to the finish, believing the game was never out of reach.

All the while, Americans around the world took to twitter to concede their astonishment and enjoyment at the display they were seeing from the country's number one goalkeeper.

Howard who is currently on twitter, executed a tweet before the game that read:

I believe
I believe that
I believe that we will win
I believe that we will win
I believe that we will win
#AreYouReady #1N1T #USA"

Retweeted almost 65k times, Howard's passion and belief in his team really serenaded with fans and his performance was one for the ages.

Celebrities, Athletes and fans all clamoured to heap praise on the goalkeeper and there were a very fine selection of tweets that can sum up the emotion surrounding Howard.

ESPN tweeted saying: "Despite the loss, Tim Howard's record setting performance was monumental" alongside an image of Howard donning all four slots on Mount Rushmore.

Roxane Gay simply tweeted: "Tim Howard is a god."

Even the captain of Belguim Vincent Kompany had to show his recognition following their victory over the U.S, he said: "Two words.. TIM HOWARD #Respect #BelUSA"

Of course there were some very original jokes to come from the fantastic outing, these include:

BLTHE tweeting: "You can't follow Tim Howard on twitter, he will block you."

Tim Siedell also said: "Tim Howard saved my marriage."

The shot stopper will continued to be admired for his gutsy performance in defeat but unfortunately for the United States, who seem to be coming around to 'soccer', their extra time loss to Belgium concludes another World Cup experience.

Their escape from the 'Group of death' and performances throughout have shown incredible resilience and a real belief personified by their team, until next time it has been a joy to have the U.S at Rio 2014.
