The USA was deadlocked in a thrilling match against the Belgium’s on Tuesday. Belgium proved to be the better side throughout the match, but thanks to a heroic effort by American goalkeeper Tim Howard, the USA kept the game close.
Tim Howard made 16 saves throughout the match, a new record for American goalkeepers, and a new World Cup record as well. It took until extra time for Belgium to finally get one past Howard. De Bruyne scored in the 93th minute to give the Belgium’s a 1-0 lead. Then 12 minutes later Lukaku scored the goal that would prove to be the game winner. Lukaku came on as a sub and was able to use his pace to beat the American defence and fire the ball past Howard.
But Jurgen Klinsmann’s side certainly didn’t go out quietly. 19-year-old Green was subbed on and had an instant impact for the Americans. He scored a sensational goal, redirecting a volley past Belgium goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois. It was quite a gamble to put this kid on so late in the match, but it paid off. Green’s goal was one of the best in the tournament. After that sensational goal, the Americans seemed to shift the momentum. There were chants of USA, USA all throughout the stadium as the crowd tried to help their team find an equalizing goal. Unfortunately, time was not on their side and the Belgium’s were able to hang on for the victory. The right team won the match in the end. It would’ve been quite a shock if the side with 17 shots on target lost the match. It would’ve also been a catastrophic failure for Marc Wilmot’s side.
However, the Belgium’s did pull through in the end. But that late surge of energy from the Americans made this match one of the most exciting matches of the tournament. And Green and Howard will be seen as heroes for years to come. The Americans are now left wondering what might have been had Wondolowski converted that chance in stoppage time. Wondolowski received a pass but blasted the the final shot of the match over the net. Any other time he would’ve buried that shot in the back of the net, but he just got nervous and fired the shot too quickly. It’s a shame that the Americans lost, having come so close to winning the match. The Americans have had a fantastic tournament. And for the Belgium’s the quest for World Cup glory is not over. And their hoping that Lukaku’s goal is the first of many.
