Last but certainly by no means least we come back to Messi. Often accused of not hitting quite the same heights and level of performance for Argentina as he does for Barcelona, many claim they simply cannot consider the 27-year-old as one of the true all-time greats until he adds a World Cup winners medal to his list of staggering accomplishments.
With the tournament obviously taking place in South America and hosts Brazil not exactly setting things alight, it could well be argued that Messi will never have a better chance to win football's biggest prize..
But while he is largely holding up his end of the bargain, his teammates - including the likes of Gonzalo Higuain and Angel di Maria - have largely failed to produce their best form and as such, it appears unlikely that Argentina will be able to triumph without significant improvement in all areas.
