Manchester United flop Bebe remains a target for Benfica and the Portuguese giants are plotting a second offer.
According to Portuguese newspaper A Bola, Benfica's initial approach was rebuffed by United as the figure was too low. But the Europa League finalists are set to return with a second improved offer once Nico Gaitan is sold.
One in, one out
Bebe has been identified by Benfica as their top transfer target this summer, but they need to raise funds first to afford United's asking price.
The most likely departure remains Gaitan, himself a one-time United target, but more recently linked with Zenit St Petersburg in Russia. Another Benfica star, Ezequiel Garay, has just completed a move to Zenit, who are managed by Andre Villas-Boas.
Bebe at United
Bebe's time at United was an unmitigated disaster. From the confusion over the initial signing to the laughably bad performances at Old Trafford, the whole sorry saga was a bit of a shambles.
Apparently Sir Alex Ferguson never saw him play, but United still shelled out £7m. Jorge Mendes lurked in the background, and the whole process looked odd. There were rumours he'd been homeless a few years earlier, and he's since admitted that he failed to adjust to the training methods at Carrington.
An injury ravaged spell on loan in Turkey followed, before he found his feet again in Portugal.
Bebe in Portugal
Back at home, the former-under 21 international set about single-handedly scoring the goals to keep his team, Paços de Ferreira in the Portuguese top flight.
Unfortunately, despite his 11 league goals, Paços de Ferreira were relegated with just 24 points. But it looks like Bebe could be jumping from the league's bottom team to the top, as Benfica won the league at a canter.
Maybe there's a happy ending after all.
