Manchester United target James Rodriguez has ruled out a transfer to the Premier League this summer, revealing that he would prefer to join a Spanish club.
The 22-year-old has lit up the World Cup with a string of sensational performances so far, and is currently the tournament's top scorer. He'll be aiming to help Colombia reach the semi-finals for the first time in their history when they take on hosts Brazil later today.
Manchester United interest
Despite his focus being on the World Cup there's still plenty of speculation about the Monaco star's future. Real Madrid are said to be leading the race for his signature while Manchester United are also believed to be in the hunt - however his current side are only willing to sell for €75 million.
It seems Real Madrid are well ahead of Manchester United in the race for Rodriguez however, with the player himself confirming that his game would be better suited to La Liga over the Premier League.
"I’ve said in the past that I’d like to play in Spain one day, because it is a league that is good technically, and where you get a lot of touches on the ball, which is my style,” said the playmaker, speaking at an Adidas event in Brazil."
"The Premier League is maybe a bit physical at this stage. But I am a Monaco player and I’m not thinking about anything like that at the moment. I am now just concentrating on Brazil, which is going to be a wonderful experience for us."
While his comments will come as a blow to Manchester United, they have plenty of other business to be getting on with in the summer transfer window. Under new boss Louis van Gaal the Red Devils are currently in the midst of a squad overhaul, and have been linked with a host of players in recent months.
A new midfielder appears to be a priority for Van Gaal, with Arturo Vidal and Bastian Schweinsteiger amongst their top targets.
Real Madrid meanwhile appear to be undergoing their own transformation despite winning the Champions League last season; they're said to be letting the likes of Angel di Maria and Sami Khedira, another two Manchester United targets, leave, while looking to recruit Rodriguez and striker Radamel Falcao.
