The summer transfer window might be an exciting time for football fans, but it can be a nerve-wracking period for players who fear another star will be brought to the club to take their place in the team.
There are plenty of high-profile players at big European clubs currently experiencing these negative emotions. On the one hand they want their clubs to be successful, but they’d rather not spend most of next season watching on from the sidelines. That’s a footballer’s worst nightmare. Unless, of course, you’re Richard Wright.
No room for sentiment
For any club wishing to be successful, there can be no room for sentiment. Opting to stick with a player purely on the basis that they’ve been at the club for a long time or are loved by supporters could, in the end, be the difference between finishing fourth and finishing top.
Managers of Europe’s biggest clubs understand this, hence why they are paid millions of pounds every year to do their job - and, in many instances - be ruthless.
For some players, the close of the summer transfer window on September 2 can’t come soon enough.
Five stars in danger of being replaced
In the forthcoming slides, we’ve listed a handful of stars from Manchester United, Chelsea, Arsenal, Real Madrid and Barcelona who could find themselves replaced this summer.
No completed deals are taken into consideration. So, for example, you won’t find Xavi Hernandez in danger of being replaced by Ivan Rakitic on this list. The deal has already gone through, Rakitic has been paraded around the Camp Nou and we’re not looking to the future.
