The injury that Bad News Barrett suffered last week on SmackDown has now resulted in his Intercontinental Championship being vacated, and the belt is now on the line in a Battle Royal match at the upcoming Battleground pay-per-view.
This is definitely bad news for both Barrett and his fans as his stock continued to rocket in the WWE; and he unfortunately had to miss the Money in the Bank event and has now had surgery.
But just like the Daniel Bryan and the WWE World Heavyweight Championship situation; the show must go on and the WWE reacted swiftly in stripping Barrett from the gold.
A handful of names have already been announced to compete in the battle royal at the Battleground event, from Cesaro, Dolph Ziggler and Big E. to Damien Sandow, Alberto Del Rio and Rob Van Dam?
But which superstar should hold the coveted Intercontinental Championship?
Right now Cesaro appears to be the early favourite to win this match; many fans have started to speculate that due to Cesaro’s losses in recent weeks, his push has failed. That definitely isn’t the case as he alongside Bray Wyatt and Roman Reigns are still stars that will be in top matches at WrestleMania 31, and for Cesaro the Intercontinental Championship could move him back up the ladder a lot quicker.
Here are my picks for who should walk out of Battleground with the Intercontinental Championship.
#5: DAMIEN SANDOW
For months now Damien Sandow is the man without an identity, and it is really frustrating as a Sandow fan to see him going through what he is. At one stage in his career he was tipped to capture the World Heavyweight Championship by pulling off a gimmick only a handful of superstars could successfully do.
We have seen him portray the likes of Abraham Lincoln, Paul Revere, Lance Stephenson and most recently, Mr. McMahon himself. But there has to be a motive behind this, this identity crisis could lead to something big which could start with the Intercontinental Championship. He is in desperate need of a title to crawl his way back to the top, he may be an outsider but definitely remains ahead of the likes of The Great Khali and Curtis Axel.
#4: DOLPH ZIGGLER
Fans still want Dolph Ziggler to get a World Title push but as the weeks pass by it looks increasingly likely that Ziggler will never reach the heights he reached in the last two years. Still, the WWE would want a popular Intercontinental Champion just like Bad News Barrett was; and for that reason Dolph Ziggler is the perfect fit.
He turns up every single week, he performs well in the ring and fans chant his name even when he isn’t there. He is in popular demand and by sticking the Intercontinental Championship on him will benefit the company and the fans, they will have a relevant champion and the fans can see more of Dolph Ziggler every week.
The only problem with Rusev is that he may not be in the battle royal as he could be up against Jack Swagger. Nevertheless sticking the Intercontinental Championship on Rusev would be a perfect move for the heel. For gimmick purposes only Lana and Rusev won’t have to keep it as an Intercontinental Championship as they could incorporate Russia into it somehow.
They are drawing so much heat with their current Russophilic gimmick and right now Rusev looks to be a huge threat in the coming year, and in order to solidify himself as a major threat he will need some gold and there is no better place time to take the championship and move forward as a massive superstar.
#2: BO DALLAS
It’s quite easy to judge Bo Dallas, as most of the fans who are criticising him are the casual armchair bookers that haven’t seen what he can do during his days in NXT. This is the perfect gimmick for him, he wants the fans to hate him as he is just so smug yet works so well on the microphone. Even though fans should be booing him, most of them are slowly becoming Bo-lievers and rightfully so.
He’s only 24-years-old so he has a lot of years ahead of him, look at the reaction he is getting now and imagine the potential he has. Currently he is undefeated in his second stint on the main roster and continues to impress fans with his gimmick and in-ring work, Bo Dallas would be the perfect Intercontinental Champion, in fact he is someone who could potentially hold the championship for a long time, you just have to Bolieve.
It’s pretty straightforward, Cesaro can’t hold the WWE World Heavyweight Championship just yet, but still needs gold. With Bad News Barrett out of the picture Cesaro seems like the natural successor, the belt will help him remain a top superstar for the remainder of the year, or at least until he is ready to feud with Brock Lesnar or go for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship.
The advantage Cesaro has over the remainder of the champions is that he is the best in-ring worker out of them all, plus he has a certain manager in the corner who only happened to guide Brock Lesnar on his way to breaking the streak at WrestleMania.
Heyman is keeping the streak relevant, he kept a dry Curtis Axel relevant as Intercontinental Champion so imagine what he can do with an already-established superstar in Cesaro, along with the coveted Intercontinental Championship belt.
