'We the People!', the crowd bellowed, as the Real American Jack Swagger stood defiant alongside Zeb Coulter, staring across at the Bulgarian Brute, the undefeated Alexander Rusev. It was a moment that will surely have swelled Swagger's heart, as chants of 'Let's go Swagger' filled the arena on Raw.
For months, we have seen Rusev plow his way through the elite WWE jobber squad, on to more legitimate threats such as former Intercontinental champion Big E Langston. But the upcoming feud between Rusev and Swagger will be the highlight of his time in WWE so far.
It has been set up perfectly, the Russian sympathiser who can't be stopped, versus the all American hero. While this sounds very much like Rocky IV and perhaps shouldn't work in 2014, the truth is it does. And this is where WWE has a chance to seize a moment in time, to help create another fan favourite. Many would expect Rusev to beat Swagger and move on until eventually being overcome by the eternal underdog John Cena, but what if Swagger were to win?
Swagger has never been face in the WWE, and so a chance like this opens up many new doors to him. His theme song is extremely over with the crowd, his manager Zeb Coulter always draws a reaction, he has a popular catchphrase, but on top of this Swagger is one of the most legitimate wrestlers in the WWE. If he were to beat Rusev in a match, even if he were to lose overall in a series, say 2-1 for example, this momentum could be used to solidify him as a solid upper midcard face for years to come.
While I am not suggesting Swagger should go any further than this, especially not to the realms of World Champion like back in 2013, he could go on to be a very capable Intercontinental Champion. As for Rusev, his first loss may as well be used to put over a fresh and still relatively young face, something WWE is seriously lacking in at the moment. If not, then all this heat will just dissipate when he inevitably loses to John Cena.
WWE has a real opportunity here. The topical issue is hot, so is the crowd, and both wrestlers can put on a great match. Time will tell if they can be influenced by the reaction, or whether it will be another jobber done as Rusev marches on.
