Manchester United outcast Anders Lindegaard could make a surprise move to Ligue 1 outfit SC Bastia this summer, after it was revealed that the French side are in contact with him.
The 30-year-old Denmark stopper has failed to oust David de Gea from his berth between the sticks at United, and French newspaper Le 10 Sport claims that Bastia are planning on taking advantage of the situation by offering him guaranteed first-team football. It’s thought that Lindegaard’s would-be new club have also contacted former Arsenal No.1 Manuel Almunia and Belgium ‘keeper Logan Bailly, as they are keen to keep their options open.
Lindegaard’s position at United
The ex-Aalesund man has been at Old Trafford for four years now, having initially signed in 2010, and yet he has only managed to make 28 appearances in all competitions. Though possessive of a towering frame Lindegaard has never been favoured as a first-choice behind the back four, and De Gea’s age means that the Spaniard will likely reign supreme in the position for a good many years to come.
Le 10 claims that Lindegaard is keen for first-team football in Ligue 1, and the opportunity to enhance his reputation as a European ‘keeper would infer that he wouldn’t hesitate to move if given the chance. Though it remains unclear exactly what sort of capacity new United boss Louis van Gaal will leave him in when he arrives, more than just a few eyebrows would be raised were he to end up in the starting XI on a regular basis.
United’s clearance sale
Much has been made over United’s need to hold what is essentially a clearance sale this summer, as Van Gaal aims to oversee a change in fortunes from the drear of last season. The futures of a number of first-team players are up in the air, and Lindegaard is far from being the only player heavily tipped to leave this summer.
Amongst the possible casualties are the likes of Javier Hernandez, Tom Cleverley, Nani, Ashley Young and Danny Welbeck, whilst a host of other players could well find it difficult to garner game-time in the new set up.
Potential replacements for Lindegaard
Whilst the big Dane isn’t thought of as being pivotal to United’s long-term ambitions moving forward, Van Gaal will potentially be forced to look for another understudy to De Gea if he leaves. 24-year-old Ben Amos could be seen as a reliable No.2, but the fact that he’s only ever made one Premier League appearance for the Red Devils could mean that his manager would feel more at ease bringing someone with more experience in.
