Manchester United delegation

It was reported this week that Manchester United had sent a delegation to the Portuguese capital in order to conclude a deal for Carvalho, who has a release fee of £37.5 million written into his current contract.

Manchester United have supposedly indicated that they would be prepared to pay this in order to bring Carvalho to Old Trafford, and it had appeared that a deal for the 22-year-old was something of a formality.

However, according to Bruno de Carvalho, Manchester United have not been in contact regarding he Portugal international, while neither have Chelsea for that matter.

He told reporters: “I haven't received any formal or informal proposals for any of our players.”

A combative midfielder needed

Following the acquisition of of Ander Herrera from Athletic Bilbao, Louis van Gaal hopes to sign a more combative player to allow the Spaniard to flourish in the Manchester United midfield.

Carvalho has for some time appeared to be the leading candidate to assume this role, with the club’s interest dating back to the tenure of David Moyes, although Manchester United may find they are contested by Chelsea.

Jose Mourinho already has Nemanja Matic among his number to fulfil this defensive role, but the expected departure of John Obi Mikel from Stamford Bridge will result in the need for reinforcement in a holding midfield position.
