It appears that Paul Smith Jr is about to get his dream fight, a world title shot against WBO champion Arthur Abraham.
A bout in Liverpool?
A venue is yet to be announced, although it is believed that the fight will take place in Berlin. However I have no doubts Eddie Hearn will be trying to bring this fight to Liverpool.
This will be the first time Smith has challenged for a world title however he has had a very successful spell on the domestic scene. He has made a successful comeback since being stopped by George Groves in 2011, but has yet to face anyone near the class of Abraham.
The fight has been met with distain by some boxing fans questioning whether “Smigga” actually deserves his shot at a world title, however as both he and Hearn have reminded us, he is highly ranked with the WBO.
It was thought that Smith, who currently holds the British Super Middleweight title following his stoppage win of Tony Dodson, would have to face Rocky Fielding before any world title shot would happen. However, when Fielding missed the weight limit in his fight earlier this year it opened the door for this fight to be made.
If Smith is successful in his fight with Abraham, then I would expect him to vacate the British title, opening the door for a big Liverpool show on which he would ideally put his belt on the line, while younger brother Callum tried to claim the British title.
I have no doubts that those thoughts have ran through the Smith household more than once in recent months.
