Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal has agreed to sell winger Wilfried Zaha for £7 million this summer - just 18 months after the 21-year-old completed a £15 million move to Old Trafford from Crystal Palace. Newcastle United are amongst the interested clubs at the front of the queue to land the one-time England international.
This is according to the Sunday People, who claim that Zaha would be a open to the idea of moving to the north-east. However, the final decision will be made by the Magpies’ owner Mike Ashley, rather than manager Alan Pardew, who wants to bring the tricky winger to St James’ Park three years after the club missed the chance to sign him for just £100,000.
Zaha: Manchester United flop
Zaha was signed by Sir Alex Ferguson in January 2013, two months after he made his England debut in an international friendly against Sweden made famous by Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s stunning four-goal haul.
At this moment in time, Zaha was widely regarded as one of the best young player in the country. His reputation was further enhanced after helping Crystal Palace earn promotion to the Premier League in May 2013 during a six-month loan deal from the Red Devils.
Big things were expected of the youngster during his debut season at Old Trafford. However, under the management of David Moyes, he would make just two Premier League appearances before being loaned out to Cardiff City, who were relegated to the Championship, during the second half of last season.
Zaha: Unfulfilled talent
Van Gaal looking at other options?
There’s a chance that Van Gaal will look to bring in at least one top-class winger this summer. Real Madrid’s Angel di Maria and Barcelona’s Alexis Sanchez have both been linked with moves to Old Trafford in recent weeks.
While Nani is expected to leave the Premier League giants this summer, Antonio Valencia recently signed a contract extension, suggesting that Van Gaal regards the Ecuador international as an important first-team player.
Zaha reportedly had problems with the defensive side of his game, while his attitude and professionalism have also been called into question. Newcastle hope the winger will be able to resurrect his career and fulfil his promise at St James’ Park.
