Manchester United are heading for a transfer battle with Arsenal after an unexpected chance to sign Barcelona legend Vicotr Valdes arose following the collapse of his move to AS Monaco.
According to the Sunday People, Louis van Gaal is keen to work with the Spain international once again at Old Trafford as he looks to shake things up in his new post. However, he will have to compete with Arsene Wenger in a battle to persuade the former Camp Nou number one to sign.
The report claims the Gunners boss feels current number one Wojciech Szczesny needs greater competition for the starting spot at Emirates Stadium, which is in short supply after Lukasz Fabianksi joined Swansea City on a free transfer this summer.
Szczesny has improved immensely over the past year or so, fighting off a challenge from his compatriot for the number one jersey, but he is still only 24 and the report claims Valdes has been invited to London to hold talks regarding the possibility of providing competition and experience.
Meanwhile, Manchester United’s interest is being put down to similar concerns, in that Van Gaal believes David de Gea does not have sufficient competition between the sticks.
The Dutchman, who is set to take over after the World Cup, worked with Valdes when he was in charge at Barcelona and trusts him to do the job of veteran goalkeeper at Old Trafford.
Valdes had already confirmed he would be leaving Camp Nou this summer once his contract expired when he suffered serious cruciate ligament damage.
It was reported that he had agreed a deal with big-spending AS Monaco in Ligue 1 before that, but this report claims he has failed a medical with the principality club and so is available once more.
