When Paige pinned AJ Lee on the historic Raw after Wrestlemania three months ago, many people had high hopes for the 21 year old. But it seems WWE never truly delivered.
Paige held the Divas Championship for three months before AJ Lee made her return following her marriage to former WWE Champion CM Punk and defeated the British superstar for her second divas championship.
This was much to the delight of the WWE Universe who feel that AJ could be the future of the divas division after that "pipebomb" she dropped a few months ago. That being said, why was Paige built up to look so strong against all other on-comers but was pinned for her title with a roll-up?
Remember Paige is only 21-years-old but she has been wrestling for almost a decade and is one of the most promising talents to come out of the UK and make it in WWE for years, when she won the divas championship the hope was that a feud much like Trish and Lita for the earlier generation would be born.
Both women are skilled and could carry a good feud between them. Paige defeated Tamina Snuka, the reborn Alicia Fox and the very talented Naomi whilst AJ was away and it looked like even though AJ had asked her for a title match she was going to retain it.
This didn't happen and now AJ has the belt back heading into what should be a great match between the two at Battleground, if Paige decides to cash in on her rematch clause.
That being said, it would be highly unlikely that the former champion will be raising the belt at the end of the match. There were those earlier internet rumours that Vince McMahon wasn't completely sold on the idea of Paige and that was why she hadn't been given a character or any form of development, she didn't cut any promo's until AJ returned and it was hard for the audience to actually relate to her.
Her in-ring work was a delight to watch but when she faced Naomi last week at Money in the Bank, it was pretty obvious who the stand out competitor was.
For me, Paige wasn't given enough development and she needed to be able to connect with an American audience the same way she did in the UK but WWE never allowed that and now it could be a long time before she holds that gold again but hopefully if she continues to work as hard as we have seen, she will be given the chances.
