Arsenal right-back Carl Jenkinson could leave the Emirates Stadium for Newcastle United after France international Mathieu Debuchy completes his move in the opposite direction. The Gunners are poised to land the 28-year-old full-back for a reported £11 million fee.
This is according to the Daily Mail, who claim that Newcastle boss Alan Pardew is interested in taking the one-time England international to St James’ Park. The Magpies’ manager is also considering making a move for Manchester City right-back Micah Richards, another one-time England international, who plans to leave his current employers.
Jenkinson: Arsenal’s permanent back-up right-back
Jenkinson had hopes of cementing his status as Arsenal’s first-choice right-back following the departure of Bacary Sagna, who completed a free transfer to Manchester City last month. However, the 22-year-old will once again find himself reduced to the role of back-up, with Debuchy set to become the newest member of the FA Cup holders’ squad.
Jenkinson is a popular figure in the Arsenal dressing room, while the club’s supporters have also been won over by his endeavour over the last two seasons. The defender was much-maligned during his debut campaign with the club he grew up supporting, but is now regarded as a useful member of the Gunners’ squad by the fans.
Mathieu Debuchy: Bio
Debuchy was snapped up by Newcastle for a £5.5 million fee in January 2013 after cementing his status as one of the best full-backs in the French league with Lille. He made his international debut for France two years earlier and helped his club win the 2010-11 Ligue 1 title alongside the likes of Yohan Cabaye and Eden Hazard.
While Newcastle failed to pull up too many trees last season, Debuchy was one of the Magpies’ standout performers, producing consistently resolute displays on a weekly basis.
Wenger, clearly impressed with what he saw from his compatriot last season, believes he has identified the ideal replacement for the departed Sagna.
What will Debuchy bring to Arsenal?
Arsenal still keen on Serge Aurier?
Arsenal’s deal for Debuchy indicates that the Gunners are no longer interested in signing Ivory Coast international Serge Aurier from Toulouse. The 21-year-old looked certain to move to the Emirates Stadium after being filmed confirming his transfer to the north London outfit, but it appears that he may have jumped the gun himself.
Of course, Wenger could decide to bring in the £7.5 million-rated right-back alongside Debuchy - a prospect that looks increasingly likely if Jenkinson is offloaded to Newcastle United this summer.
