Manchester United have a “strong chance” of signing Real Madrid winger Angel di Maria this summer, according to Sky Sports’ La Liga expert Graham Hunter. The Scottish journalist revealed that there is a queue of clubs hoping to secure the Argentina international’s services, but the Red Devils are in the mix despite failing to qualify for either the Champions League or Europa League.
Hunter posted on Twitter: “Ok, to clarify. I understand that #DiMaria is in huge demand. I believe [Real Madrid] willing to sell him for big fee to fund their further adventures.
“Personally I think they'd be mad to sell #DiMaria AND I think it'll be very hard to persuade Monaco to sell [James Rodriguez].
“However IF #DiMaria goes #Utd have a strong chance of getting him. But there's a queue. Perfect player for [Louis van Gaal] though. I'd miss him in Liga.”
Real Madrid to accept £48m fee?
Recent reports claim that Real Madrid will accept any fee in excess of £48 million for Di Maria, who enjoyed arguably his best season to date at the Bernabeu last term. The 26-year-old scored 11 goals and provided a remarkable 26 assists in 52 matches for Los Blancos, and picked up the Man of the Match award in the Champions League final, as Real Madrid finally secured their tenth European Cup.
After such a good season, it’s perplexing why Real Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti is prepared to offload the South American. However, it’s believed the Italian - and the club’s president, Florentino Perez - are determined to sign the aforementioned James Rodriguez from AS Monaco, along with his teammate Radamel Falcao.
Di Maria keen to play for Man United?
Speculation is rife that Di Maria would favour a move to Manchester United over any other club - including Arsenal, who will be competing in next season’s Champions League - because of an interview he conducted with the News of the World in 2009.
In that interview, Di Maria was quoted as saying that his dream “is to play some day for Manchester United”.
“And I won’t stop till I get it,” he added. “When I watch [Wayne] Rooney and all of them on TV, I can’t wait to play there at Old Trafford. “When I was a little boy I watched Arsenal games as well, but Manchester United always dazzled me most.”
Angel di Maria: World-class winger
Di Maria can shine at Old Trafford
Under Ancelotti, Di Maria proved that he is capable of playing in a variety of positions. Most expected him to leave the Bernabeu following the arrival of Gareth Bale, but the Argentine superstar adapted superbly to a central role and went on to enjoy a superb campaign.
Regardless of the system Louis van Gaal opts to deploy at Old Trafford next season, therefore, Di Maria would fit in with ease - whether it be a 4-3-3, 4-2-3-1 or a 3-4-3.
But, in order to get the best out of this world-class talent, Van Gaal may opt to use Di Maria in his best position - out on the left flank, where he can cause just about any right-back in world football all manner of problems.
