After a season with only one senior striker in the shape of Olivier Giroud to call upon, there have been many calls for Arsene Wenger to open his cheque book and purchase a new forward this summer. But do the Gunners actually need one?
The French striker had a much improved season in 2014. After a year of adapting to the English game, he netted 16 times in the Premier League and six more in other competitions. However, this wasn't enough to stage a solid title challenge and the North London side fizzled out around winter in typical Arsenal fashion.
Many have used this as a reason to demand 'much-needed' signings at the Emirates, although there may be a proven goal corer already in the Arsenal ranks in the form of exciting young forward Joel Campbell.
The 22-year-old Costa Rican has found first-team opportunities hard to come by since joining the Gunners in 2011 and has been loaned out for experience each year. After a string of average performances at clubs such as Lorient, Puntarenas and Real Betis, Campbell really pushed on last season whilst with Greek champions Olympiakos.
During his time in Greece, the youngster improved massively with eight goals from 32 apps in the Greek Super League mostly from a wide position.
The forward's blistering pace and impressive finishing made him a nightmare to stop not only in the league but also the Champions League. I'm sure I don't need to remind Manchester United fans of the wondergoal he scored against them back in February.
World Cup form
Not only was Campbell impressive domestically last season but he has now also proven himself on an international level as well. after firing out of the blocks at the 2014 World Cup with some stellar performances for Costa Rica, especially in the surprise opening victory over Uruguay which saw Campbell grab a goal, assist and claim the man of the match award.
Campbell is exactly what Arsenal fans are looking for which is an exciting, quick, skillful forward who can also create and finish goals.
Although he is not quite ready to start for the Gunners he could offer vital support for Olivier Giroud and would make a big impact coming off the bench.
Do you think Joel Campbell could cut it in the Premier League or should Arsenal be signing a new forward?
