In one of the strangest, if not brilliant, substitutions of recent times, Netherlands boss Louis Van Gaal took the drastic decision to substitute goalkeeper Jasper Cilessen for Tim Krul in the 120th minute of their World Cup quarter-final with Costa Rica with the penalty shoot-out looming.
Paid off big time
The decision paid off spectacularly, with Krul saving two spot-kicks in the shoot-out to send the Dutch through to the semi-finals, but this is not exactly the only time a substitution has inspired victory.
Choosing the identity of the players to swap and when to do so can often be one of the toughest tasks a manager has on matchdays, especially when things are not going to plan. While not all subs need to be quite so unusual and inspired as Van Gaal's, there have been numerous occasions when similar impacts have been made by changing personnel.
