First Paul Scholes waxed lyrical about Kroos’ ability, expressing disappointment Manchester United had failed to sign the German ahead of Ander Herrera, before Wayne Rooney contacted the player directly with a message of goodwill.
Wayne Rooney praise
Following Germany’s quite spectacular 7-1 thrashing of Brazil in the World Cup semi-final, during which Kroos was abel to score twice, Rooney tweeted him to offer supreme praise of his performance in Belo Horizonte.
Rooney said: “@ToniKroos was brilliant again today joy to watch.”
Kroos, clearly occupied celebrating the stunning triumph for the Germans, took his time over a response, but has since tweeted back to the Manchester United striker in order to express is gratitude.
The 24-year-old replied: “Thanks ! All the best for you !!!”
Sustained transfer pursuit
Hardly a meeting of minds or most momentous of Twitter exchanges, but it is a notable one given the transfer pursuit of Kroos Manchester United had maintained for much of this year prior to the appointment of Louis van Gaal as manager.
Kroos was identified as a key acquisition during the reign of David Moyes, who has since claimed he would have been confident of concluding a deal during this summer transfer window had he remained in his position at Old Trafford.
The recruitment of a creative midfield player has been a priority for Manchester United for some time and, given Kroos’ apparent availability, he represented a potentially pivotal signing for the club. Van Gaal, however, had other plans.
Paul Scholes a huge fan
Kroos would have been a popular signing indeed had he arrived at Manchester United, among both fans and players, as the glowing endorsement from Scholes has shown. Here’s a reminder of what Scholes said in his Paddy Power blog...
“I love watching Toni Kroos. I think he’s brilliant. I love the way he controls the ball and controls games. He can really play a pass and has superb vision.
“Kroos is capable of scoring goals too, from outside the box on either foot. I just wish Man United had signed him (Yes, it is good to see United bringing in new players, but they haven’t signed anything like the quality of Kroos).”

Real Madrid transfer beckons
But rather than leave Munich for Manchester, Kroos will instead move to Madrid. Bayern have been forced into a sale given Kroos’ reluctance to renew his contract, and the fee for the transfer is expected to be around €30 million.
Kroos, meanwhile, is reported to have agreed a deal worth around €5 million-per-year after tax.
